AFL Round 1: Gold Coast v North Melbourne in a Wonderful Snorefest

It’s not exactly the match of the round but one thing that we love to do at The Protected Zone is focus on the lesser games, the not-so-match-of-the-round. It’s part of our own equalisation policy to even up the competition, especially in the way that it’s reported.

Both of these teams finished in the bottom four last year, a surprise for North Melbourne after reaching the finals in 2016. It wasn’t so surprising for Gold Coast though, there’s something about this experiment that hasn’t worked since it commenced in 2011. Assessing their list, they actually have some good talent, and perhaps their main problems have arisen from not having the right personnel at the top of the chain: the coach.

But they’ve got someone that has luck on his side and, as Napoléon Bonaparte once said: “give me men that are lucky”. Stewart Dew is their new head coach – premierships with Port Adelaide and Hawthorn and a lengthy spell as assistant coach at the Sydney Swans, he has success written all over him. But will it be with this team? Maybe not this year, but we’re expecting the Suns to rise up the ladder. That’s not a pun on the sun rising, we actually mean it.

Brad Scott must surely be on his last chance. He’s been the coach of North Melbourne since 2010, but the patience must be running thin. Todd Goldstein had a shocker of season in 2017 and he’ll be looking for redemption, but so will most the team – remembering they were in the battle for the wooden spoon last year against Brisbane in the final game of the year.

Gold Coast to win this game, possibly by some distance.
