Comrades of the world unite, it’s the Friday night match of Round 13 of this very very special 2017 AFL season, and we provide the AFL preview. But if you can’t be bothered reading further, feast your ears on The AFL Protected Zone Podcast. One of the best! (see our program notes).
AFL Preview Game 2: North Melbourne v St Kilda
This is a match that will decide the fate of both teams in this even season. Even though the loser will always be able to return and create some momentum for the rest of the season, time is starting to run out. St Kilda had the potential to be a finals team this year, but something has happened over the past three games – they’ve lost all of them, and quite convincingly. Hammered by Sydney, then Western, then Adelaide, their confidence has been shattered, and it might be difficult to get it back.
North Melbourne hasn’t had such a great season either, but they have had a string of ‘honourable losses’ to gee up their supporters. They have potential too, but they seem less shattered than St Kilda.
Nick Riewoldt is back for St Kilda but he’s probably back so he can collect his pension and won’t have a great influence on the game – his knee is too wonky. There has been some talk about North Melbourne’s tall man, Todd Goldstein, being dropped if he doesn’t perform tonight, so that might be a great incentive to take this game by the scruff of the neck and boot some inspirational goals.
Following on from Thursday night’s upset victory by West Coast – we predicted this (listen to our podcast if you don’t believe us) – it’s a round where it’s best to choose a winner that’s positioned lower on the ladder. St Kilda is currently 12th, North Melbourne is 15th.
In this very strange topsy-turvey season, that means that North Melbourne will win. It’s opposites round. North Melbourne also has defeated St Kilda in its last seven encounters. Number eight is coming on Friday night. #AFLNorthSaints
