AFL Preview Game 2: Adelaide v St Kilda
This is a rematch of the 1997 AFL Grand Final. Obviously, there are no players remaining from this game, and there won’t be any residual influence from that game, but it’s still necessary to point this out.
Adelaide has been very solid this year, but when they fall apart, they do it very well. Three losses this season – 59 points, 41 points and 22 points. The 22 point loss was last weekend against Geelong, but the final margin flattered them: they were never in the game. There is a new catch-cry in the AFL: stop Sloane and Taylor; win the game. That has been the consistent factor in these three losses, where these two keys players have been shut down.
So we’re not saying anything new when we say if St Kilda stop Rory Sloane and Taylor Walker, they’ll win the game. But can they? St Kilda can be an explosive team. Not in the same way that evidence from James Comey about President Donald Trump’s dealings with Russia is explosive, but similar. They’re playing at Adelaide Oval, where Adelaide seemed invincible until they were spanked by Melbourne in Round 8, so an upset could be on the cards.
We’re also on haircut and boot watch in this game, so keep a look out for any fashionable rock-star hair-dos or shocking pink boots. Or fluoro.
Josh Bruce comes into the St Kilda side and we feel that they’re a better team when he’s included. But he hasn’t been in great form and was dropped a few weeks ago. He could be the surprise packet. If Adelaide lose this game, we can safely say that they’re the May premiers for this year. Great in the first six rounds, but wobbly at the knees over the past five games. But they should do enough to win.
Adelaide to win. #AFLCrowsSaints
